Got the following e-mail today from a photographer, Jesse Freidin, who last year joined Bailey and me on a pheasant hunt, a hunt test and a field trial taking great shots with his classic film camera. He told me he was working on a gallery of images depecting hunting in current society. If you are in Northern Virginia between June 5th and September 29th, you might want to stop by and take a look:

Here is what he sent today.

Hi Rod-
How is everything in your world? I hope you and Bailey had a great end of the season, and had a fun time at the tests and trials. I just wanted to pass along a press release and some info about my upcoming exhibit at the National Sporting Library - my first exhibit of the work I've been doing, which will include a few portraits of you from our time at Hastings. I haven't selected or begun producing the show yet, but the museum will be exhibiting around 15 pieces. It should be a great show, and I'm quite happy to be their first exhibited contemporary sporting photographer. Thanks again for all your support, information, and friendship as I stumbled through the first steps in this long series.

“Hunting requires humility. This is what attracted me to this series. There is a transformation that hunters undergo in which they temporarily shed their human coil, entering into a primal dialogue with animal, the environment, and the immediacy of their senses. I feel a kinship to the hunt. On the surface level it bears similarities to working in analog film. The single moment of execution that can make an hour of attentive focus worth it - or not. But there is something else. Something about what hunting tells us about our own human nature. This is what I am tracking with this series. The modern sportsman’s meditations on nature. The connection they share with their dogs and their hunting companions. These are moments I am seeking to document and present in this series.” - Jesse Freidin

Here is a little info- maybe you'd like to share on your blog?

Thanks so much, and I look forward to catching up soon.

-Jesse

"I am exhibiting a new series of work at the National Sporting Library and Museum in Middelburg, Virginia (www.nsl.org)- just an hour from DC- in Spring 2013 (June 5- Sept 29), and I thought the series might be of interest to your readers. This exhibition will feature a portrait series about the intimate and inspiring bond between hunters and their gun dogs, and the importance of returning to wilderness via the modern sporting world. This series is a national survey of the contemporary sportsman, telling the story of hunting communities throughout the country (national in scope)."
