Our vet here in Louisiana has advised us to switch our V's Heartworm medication from Heartgard Plus to ProHeart 6 (moxidectin). Its a injectible dose that lasts for 6 months at a time. She shared the results of a recent study conducted by Bayer which proved that Heartgard Plus was NOT 100% successful in preventing heartworm in dogs.

I'm wondering if anyone here has had this discussion with their vets regarding switching their dogs to this new drug? Summer is almost upon us and Louisiana is infested with mosquitoes this time of the year. Any advise/guidance would be much appreciated!

My concern with the injectable ProHeart is that several years ago one formulation of ProHeart was taken off of the market because of the side affects. I am sure that this is a newer version of the drug, but I would still be cautious. I am in east Texas and have the same concerns as you about the skeeters, thankfully it's been to windy for them to bother us much today.
