Hi, I am seriously considering getting a vizsla puppy. I wondered the thoughts of the experienced owners.
My current position
I am a single dad with 3 children aged 4,6 & 8. We have a cavachon aged 5.
Our routine,
Midweek I leave the house 840 to take kids school, I go to work 1 mile from where we live, I go home 12 to walk dog for 45 min.
I then collect dog Back up 5 and then collect kids from school club, we walk for anything from 1-2 hours.
Weekends we are out, from 4pm Friday and for hours and hours over sat and sun, our dog is with us on our travels, I'd say our dog is out for 4 hours sat, same sun, and 2 on Friday, even in winter months. We mix it up, beach, woods, fields etc.
My kids and I love dogs and have been talking of a Vizsla for a few years, it has always been on the agenda and I had previously concluded that once kids are older, and help me out at home...., then we could get a Vizsla. My dad has a weimraraner so I understand the dog type and the daily requirements. The difference is that his wife didn't work. I let our dog have free roam of our house and it's a decent size. My intention would be to crate Vizsla and aim to walk it with kids for 30 min before school. I could take to work a few afternoons but depending on my meeting schedule it is not guaranteed and then part of me thinks it may unsettle routine. Any advice of someone in similar position would be great! Thank you. David;-)

David, what kind of car do you drive? With three small kids and a Cavachon..I had to look that one up...as well as your general lifestyle, I bet some SUV or minivan thing, right? It all seems to fit in my mind. It meets your current needs and lifestyle.

A Vizsla is a Ferrari (the crowd rolls it's eyes). Does that work for you currently? Seriously, can you see yourself and the three small kids and the Cavachon piling into the Ferrari to go to school or the park? Sure, it's a great idea and who wouldn't want one. But does it work for you?

A Vizsla is a high performance animal with high performance needs. Think: LOTS of strenuous exercise, off lead time. Then, there are it's emotional needs, to be a full member of the family. A Weim is not a fair comparison in anything but size.

I don't intend to sound too negative, but based on your lifestyle and gen'l description, I don't think this is a good thing for you.
