Allergies & Skin Issues

Hey All,

My 6 year old male V, Jaxson, has been plagued with allergies. It always flares up, sometimes a Cytopoint injection helps, but I prefer he not have to get those.

this year it is bothering that poor guy so much he’s scratched around his left eye till it’s bled and has eaten his paw raw. I am waiting for the vet to confirm an appointment.

in the meantime, can anyone provide some suggestions on how to combat severe allergies with these dogs?

It depends on if the allergy is food, or environmentally related. I had one that had seasonal allergies. The only good thing is I have the same allergies. So as soon as I would start to get stuffy, I would start her on Zyrtec. Before I knew this, we would be at the dermatologist to get it under control.

You could always give Benadryl to help with the itching, and bathe with a gentle shampoo. I like MiconaHex+Triz shampoo, because it’s anti microbial and moisturizing. You can also rub some coconut oil in your hands, and then rub on the areas that are the most inflamed. None of the things are going to get rid of the allergy. Just helps keep him comfortable until you get to the vet.

Thank you. His are seasonal, I think it's pollen. I have him on Zrtec, doesn't do much unless he's breaking out in hives. Sounds like there is nothing to do but go see the vet.

Have you or anyone you know gone to the derm to do the test to see what they're allergic to? I have called and it's $1500-$2000 for this test, I am not sure if it's worth it?
MiconaHex+Triz shampoo
We're feeding Sasha a vet designed homemade diet that helped reduce itching but the shampoo once a week helps also. She still itches herself but not enough to break the skin which is a relief for us.

Jaxson will die if he gets a bath once a week :) - But maybe I could try that shampoo and do it every other week. He got his annual Cytopoint shot this week which has provided him relief.

It also comes in a spray to, that you can use in between baths. I’ve just found the shampoo works better than the spray alone.

I had our 18 month old boy tested thru our vet. They drew blood and then sent it off to Allergen to have it analysed. He was mildly allergic to quite a few things so we started him on the allergen serum. He's now at the max suggested dosage and I'm not sure how well it's working. He's had to have 2 cytopoint shots which usually only last a month or so. At $188 a dose I'm trying to not have to get those monthly. He is still breaking out but doesn't seem very itchy. Bath once a week, wipe down after every romp in the woods, and rub on cortisone cream on affected areas. this seems to be keeping it under control. The vet said the allergen serum can take 6 to 9 months to work. He's only been on it 2 months so I'm hoping his skin will improve eventually. In the meantime, this regimen seems to be keeping him comfortable. Hope this helps!
