hi, we're looking into breeding our boy when he's 2, he's currently 14 months old. just wondering how early can we get him hip scored ? can we do it now and then all results being ok breed him in about a years time providing we find a suitable girl for him.

Typically it's at least 2 years, when growth is complete. The later the better, as it better ensures accuracy in the resulting radiograph. It also better ensures that other health problems are not present and potentially being passed down as well, to say nothing of allowing for complete growth and maturation in their physique. Time is on your side here.

As an FWIW, it's best to have a/the breeder assess his overall conformation to not only make sure he has features worthy of continuation but also, that they are complimentary with the bitch. There are a lot of really "Unpleasant" looking Vizslas out there resulting from backyard breeding practices which does no favors for the breed.

our boy can get abit spooked out by certain things out on the walks, like people wearing red coats??
if there's been an occasion which I know he'll be anxious I give him some rescue remedy by bach. there's a pet version. normally about 30 minutes beforehand. might be worth a try?

Is this the same boy, as mentioned in the post a above? If it is, I would wait to see if he overcomes his anxiety without any meds. Dogs can go through some fear periods. So you need to let them mature, before considering breeding.
For OFA, they need to be 2 years old.

We could talk about health clearances, study his pedigree, and you could have someone evaluate him structurally.
But none of that matters, if he does not have a excellent temperament.

I'm not trying to down you in any way.
I've found faults in my own dogs, which would lead me to never breed them. Doesn't mean I don't love them dearly.

that's what I thought about waiting till he's fully matured. I have read mixed things about the age limit of hip scoring that's why I asked . there's no rush as he's only a youngster.
his anxiety level isn't high, just had the typical fear stages they go through during the developmental stages. everybody that knows him have all said he's got a lovely temperament and is a good looking boy and that's why we would like to breed him.
we'll wait till he's at least 2 anyway and then make the decision.
