Dog Door Tips/Vizsla English Setter Mix

Hello, We are new owners to Abe who is currently a 16 week old male Vizsla English Setter mix, looks all Vizsla, no Setter. We brought him home at 9 weeks and he seems like a smart little bugger in all ways but I do need suggestions in one area. I think he has me trained and not the other way around in the house breaking area. In 7 weeks he has used the carpet 5 times for #1 and never a #2 accident in the house, I think even with the 5 accidents that's decent for a pup who was till 9 weeks when we got him raised in an outdoor kennel not in a house. He has a routine that works well as I'm home during the day, so unless I'm not paying attention to his cues he uses the outdoors pretty well and every week gets better. However, we have two dog doors to get outside, one from the house to the garage, then a path to the dog door to the outside, and he uses both doors to come back in, and will use them to go out when I'm right there. Any tips, tricks, advice or experience with how to get Abe to go out all on his own? Maybe that will come with more time? The goal is when he's gotta go, go without me. Right now he's excellent if someone is along with him, which is great at this point, but won't be so terrific when it's cold outside. I haven't been able to help him make the connection that he can freely go in and out all by himself at any time, that he doesn't need a human along when he's gotta go. Thanks for any comments.

Some of my vizslas would go out alone, potty, stalk birds, and lay in the sun.
Others think they need a audience, to be outside. I would think with time, your pup would use the doggy door to go out alone to potty. It just might not stay out there to play, unless you join him.

Thanks Texasred. I see now as I am looking around there are other threads to post my above question, but 'ya know it said my first post went here so that's what I did. Every week Abe is better at following the rules and calming down, and I have implemented a new bathroom routine.... I still go out but I don't go onto the grass, I stay back on the patio and encourage him to go. Giving him more and more invisible leash in a way and its working. I will see if it's still a problem in a few months, I just have hopes he will determine when he has to go out on his own without encouragement. Maybe the light bulb will come on like after potty training a kid and they run to the bathroom all by themselves. Once he figures out he is in control of going out the dog door on his own for that purpose maybe it will become habit.

Vizsla/Setter? Pics, please!

It's unclear what "outdoor kennel" means, is he not house socialized at all?

Start by eliminating the current indoor potty carpets (if possible) or at the very least, totally disinfect them so the scent is gone. Then, designate a potty area outside, and pick him up on predetermined intervals to go put to potty, praise, pick him up, carry back into the house (or to other outside location). You want to reinforce the potty area and his use of it.
