When Good Dogs Get Old...

Today I had to put down my almost 16 year old pit mix. He was a great dog and mentor to my new pup Cash. I hate when they get old, but I guess it happens to the best of 'em!

Wow, 16. Most of us can only dream of that much time. Sorry for your loss. Sure he'll be looking over cash.

CrazyCash, I am so very sorry for your loss. Been there myself too many times, and I know about that kind of grief. You try to be brave. You tell yourself "He lived a good, long life." But still, it cuts you like a knife. You are in my thoughts. So glad you have Cash to help you through!

Re: When Good Dogs Get Old...

it's heartbreaking when you have to make that final visit to the vets and you feel like you'll never be happy again. I still think about my old dogs on an almost daily basis but these days it's with a smile on my face and not a tear in my eye. My two boys still love the bedtime stories of "Daddy and Rex's boyhood adventures"

CrazyCash - I am so sorry for you loss. I guess we have all been there and it never gets any easier, so I hope Cash is cheering you up.

That is an amazing age for a dog to reach, he must have had a wonderful life.

Re: When Good Dogs Get Old...

Thanks everyone! It is always a tough decision and one that I hate to make, but he was a great dog and loyal dog and it was my last act of kindness to keep him from suffering. It's hard to think that after all these years I'm not going to see his sweet little face again, but I have lots of good memories and stories about him. It also helps to have two other dogs at home - it would be too hard if the house was quiet, I don't know what I'd do without the sound of jingling collars...

Re: When Good Dogs Get Old...

Crazy Cash. so sorry for your loss. RIP to your sweet friend. I can only imagine what you're going through.

We never had dogs growing up - my parents weren't fans. In fact, I used to be afraid of them, especially pit bulls. But back in the 90's my parents had to take in my brother's pit bull puppy because he joined the military and his roommates couldn't take care of her in his absence.

She was the sweetest dog in the world and she helped me get over my fear. My father grew to adore her. They were BFF's. Truly inseparable. All of us kids had moved out and Shiner (she had black around one eye) was the best thing that ever happened to my dad. My brother never took her back.

My dad had to put her down when she was 15 and my mother said to me "I have seen your father lose both of his parents, 2 brothers, and a grandchild and I have NEVER seen him as upset as he is over Shiner. I just don't understand the attachment he had to that dog."

Now that I'm the proud parents of 2 dogs, I completely get it! It's hard to let them go but worth it given all the joy they bring.

My thoughts are with you and your dog family.
