Please reply with the age of your oldest V and any wisdom surrounding the end of life circumstances. My 14 year old Vizsla is still her old self except she is not eating and looks very thin and fragile. Hearing is minimal, other than that- same great dog. I depend on family to dog sit when we travel but I am afraid she may trend downwards and it would be really unfair to that person if something happen. I feel so selfish deciding when her life should end. Any advice?

The receptionist at the vets I use had a Vizsla that lived to 17, she'd been happy and up for her walks untill the very end.

My decision for my old girl was made for me, she had suspected liver cancer. She was 13 yrs and 6 months. I was very grateful for the last month we had together but a turn for the worse and I knew it was time. A terribly sad day indeed, but also a relief as she was not having any fun and an ill dog is a tremendous worry.

We just put down our 13-year old Lab two weeks ago. The telltale sign was not eating, especially for a Lab. The day we decided to put him down his breathing was laboring and was obviously very weak. We had to literally carry him to the car.

As someone told me during the 2-3 week period prior to making the decision "the day you make the decision will be days too late". In other words, we try to hang onto every single day we can, and from my most recent experience, was too long and at the expense of our beloved pets health. He definitely suffered the last several days of his life.

It sucks plain and simple. But if we want pets in our lives, it's the price we have to pay sadly.

Exactly what logged on to post. They have a bad week and you're just about to make that last trip and then they rally a bit so you put it off. The problem is that last few days are pretty awful for the poor dog if you drag it out.

It's quality of life, that lets you know when it's time. If they have more good days than bad, and are happy. I wouldn't let one go. If they are only still with you, because your not ready to lose them. It's time.
