Potentially Anxious Puppy

I have a 6 month old male Vizsla called Axel. He’s been house trained for about 2 months now, however he wees inside his crate very often when we are not in the house. During the day the puppy is alone a reasonable amount, 3 hours in the morning following a long walk and then 3 hours in the afternoon following my visit at lunch in which I’ll leave him with his kong. Generally, in one of these two slots, I come home to find that he’s weed in his crate. He’s never done this when we’ve been in the house. I always make sure he goes out before we put him in and we don’t leave water in anymore. Not sure what to do - it’s getting really tiresome having to clean up urine every day and replace blankets etc. He sleeps for 10 hours straight at least on a night and could happily sit for hours with us and not need the toilet. Any ideas on what to do?

I'd rule out a UTI first here.

Then, consider less time in the crate, he might need to build up to it when you're not home. Does he have regular crate time when you're home? That will help him break the association btwn the crate and loneliness. You can try to move the crate to a different location, and try covering half of it with a blanket so it's more den like.

We have been having this issue with our four month old, it is so exhausting and frustrating isn’t it 😞 we have found that leaving his crate in a pen with the crate door open has really helped (pen door closed obviously) We leave a puppy pad in the pen part along with toys and his kong, we’ve had a good couple of days where we have come home to nothing! No idea what difference it has made to Fletcher, but he seems to prefer it and won’t make a mess 🙂 now we’re just trying to deal with the 4:30am wake up call!
