Meet Sage

New dog owners here! We bought our Vizsla, Sage, after much research into the best dog for us. My husband has pet allergies, so it was always "no indoor pets" for us. But we decided maybe we could get one that is low shedding. I have always wanted a dog to run with, so combining the two desires, we came to a Vizsla. It was a technically a present to my youngest child who is eight, but with a family of 8, she gets lots of attention. We also found when said 8yo climbed a tree to get away from her biting at his pant leg, that she definitely could not be only his responsibility.

So we got her at 8 weeks a few days before Christmas. She is now 13 weeks. I've attached three pics from her first week with us and one of her in her bed this week to show how she's grown. I had no idea how fast she would grow!

Walking was initially a chore, and we stuck with play in the back yard. It has gotten better the last week or so, and I have gotten her to jog around the block about three times now. Plan to keep it to short jogs just to get her familiar until she is one year like I've read. But jogging with her is much easier than walking! Not so much sniffing around and redirecting her.

We have only owned a dog one other time many years ago, but it was an outdoor dog and we were in the country. So this has been a big adjustment for us. We have six kids who chip in with taking her out and getting up at night to let her out, or I might have given up by now. We homeschool, so no issues with separation anxiety.

Welcome! I see you're in LA. If you're anywhere near Shreveport and the family needs a break, Scout and I would be happy to puppysit.

We are in Monroe. Don't make it to Shreveport very often, but thanks for the offer!

Re: Meet Sage

Welcome to the forum!
Sage is a very pretty girl. Not sure re the shedding point though. Hope you haven't been misinformed, but vizslas do shed. Sometimes lots! Some may shed less than others though. Those darn hairs get everywhere! I rub my girls down with a pair of rubber gloves on, to loosen all the dead hairs out. They can cause skin irritation/itching too, and I don't have any allergies, but do find if I am playing with them, I come out in itchy spots, and so does my son. Good luck with the running. She'll be good company, but Harrigab is right to advise to take it easy. I run with my girls, but I am careful with my youngest, who is 1 and a half years old. I don't think they are too keen anyway, being on a lead, so I always try to make sure they get off lead running where possible. That's what vizslas love best. Freedom! ;D

Meet Sage

I guess we shall see about the shedding. I thought with the lack of a second coat and the listing on websites as being a breed that is more "hypoallergenic" vizsla was a safe bet. My husband still prefers not to get too close, though.

Re: Meet Sage

Mine seemed to shed more as she got older. Now I see those little red hairs all over my black jeans whenever I wear them. It's not like the tumbleweeds of hair you get with breeds like goldens, though.
