How to cure PTSD from fireworks

We have a six month old puppy. On July 3 at 9:30 pm we let him out to take care of his business before going to his crate for the night. As soon as he got out in the yard, the neighbor set off a multi-shot mortar type firework that was LOUD. Our puppy took off on a dead run and it was four days before someone found him. On the 4th, our subdivision sounded like a war zone. We had to leave on vacation before he was found. Luckily, my sister was able to pick him up from the individual that found him and we just got him back today. It's obvious he's not his old self. In addition to being a family member, we planned on him also being a hunting companion this fall. Does anyone here have experience in training a dog to hold at gun shot after being traumatized?

Yes, I sent my young dog to a pro trainer.

Trainers I would trust to work with a dog that's had this happen.
Ken, Willowynd Ranch is on this forum.
Jon Hann, Perfection Kennels.
Maurice Lindley, Lindley Kennels

If none of those work for you, they might referr you to someone in your state.

Thanks TexasRed. Looks like Perfection Kennels is only a couple of miles from my in-laws. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of them. I'll be contacting them.

Texas Red,

Thankyou again for your recommendations. I picked my puppy up from Perfection Kennel yesterday. Jon and Jessica did a fantastic job with him! He associates a gunshot with birds and at the shot, there is absolutely no flinch nor hesitation. He's looking for a falling bird. I cannot recommend them highly enough!

I'm so happy for you, and your pup.
A good many of these dogs aren't given the opportunity to overcome the bad experience. I hope you two enjoy many days in the field.
